As the first night of Star Wars celebration descends, the masses assemble to watch the movies in order. Two movies a night spread over the length of the con starting with Episode I and Episode II in 3D, the first time Episode II was shown in 3D in america. THe field of depth put into this effort is astonishing. The 3D fits throughout the film, even in what you would assume would be mundane scenes such as the voyage to Naboo.
The battle scenes are where it really comes into its own. Genosis has always been one of my favorite scenes in the New Trilogy, but seeing it in 3D makes me feel like a child again, seeing it for the first time. The blasts from the droids, the sabers, and even the Aklay seem to be coming at you, like your amid the clones descending from the sky to save the day. Jax and the Kimonoans look beautiful, or at least as beautiful as Jax has ever been. The map room in the Jedi temple becomes surreal, the Stars orbiting in three dimensions around the characters gives a new feel to the scene.
All in all I really hope that these movies get wide release, as the 3D really enhances every aspect of the films. And most of all, it turns an okay Star Wars film – I can say that now that I’m an an adult – to the amazing movie I once thought of when I was as a child, the one that brought awe and wonder, the one that made me want to look up and not be content with our terrestrial existence.
