Spoiler-Free Highlights from Q&A with Emily VanCamp (Agent 13) from Captain America: Civil War

Working with Russo Brothers:

Having a pair of director is an “amazing way to work. For a movie of this scale, [getting great performances] is “a huge bonus.” Working with them is a “win-win” situation.

What new things for Sharon Carter?

Captain America: Winter Soldier was “planting the seed” for Sharon. We see her evolve throughout this film. There is an “inevitable immediate trust [with Captain America] throughout the film.” Furthermore, Sharon “follows her heart, and not always her head” this time around.

Comics fan growing up?

Not really a fan when younger, but after landing the role, Emily “read the bible [from Marvel] on everything Sharon Carter.” The film’s version of Sharon “takes elements from each story arc. It’s a cool process.” Specifically, Emily loved having so much background on Sharon, because for some roles, “that info is not always available.”

Agent 13 Empowering Women:

“Amazing!” Emily is proud that Marvel is constantly “incorporating more women [into their films].”

Independent from your character, which side would you choose in the film?

Emily would probably pick Captain America, but it’s “tough.” Emily’s read so much on Sharon, she likely empathizes with Steve’s position. But, Tony has a valid point on safety concerns. Emily resolves that she would have to “pick both sides.”

Transition from TV to Film:

With films, it’s a “luxury to have time.” But, due to Emily’s TV background, she is able to “easily get scenes done if rushed.”

Different approach to Sharon in this film?

Film “can delve into her relationships more. It’s not hidden who she is.”

How Avengers pick sides?

“Steve and Tony’s choices are given depth.” We really understand why they make the choices that they do. For the other Avengers, many of them just end up “picking sides.”

On working with an all-star cast

“Just amazing! [You can] show up to work and play!”

How younger-self would react to this role?

“Probably wouldn’t believe it. It’s kind of crazy.”

What makes film stand-out?

The film is “epic.” Marvel “takes it to a whole new level.”

Which three heroes would you invite to a party?

Falcon, because he can take people for rides. Thor, because he can take people to Asgard. Scarlet Witch, because “I really like Liz Olsen” (Editor’s note: I also really like Liz Olsen).

Future of Marvel Films:

“Always excited for all of them! The movies just keep getting better!”
