Much has been said about how 2016 was an unusually tragic and surprising year. If you were to compare it to a movie, you might say it was like Dr. Strangelove meets Terms of Endearment meets The Apprentice written & directed by M Night Shyamalan. Indeed, it was a historically strange year where every day you turned on the TV or went online to learn about yet another tragedy. Most of the time you wouldn’t let it get to you. So you went out and voted, you wrote facebook posts to “get your voice heard”, you tried to make a difference in whatever way you could. But, every now and then it did get to you. So you went with friends or by yourself somewhere to escape for a few hours. A place that sometimes cheered you up, put life in perspective, encouraged you to have fun. You went to the movies.
Despite the disappointments of 2016, a place that did not disappoint was the movies. From stellar blockbusters like Deadpool and Arrival to smaller, emotionally packed indies like Moonlight and La La Land, it’s fair to say that it was a great year in cinema. To commemorate the year and remind us of a few of the good things 2016 offered, we asked some of our Motion Picture Club contributors to list their favorite movies of the year.
