Happy Death Day is Scream crossed with Groundhog Day and Mean Girls. On her birthday, sorority girl Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) wakes up in the dorm room of Carter Davis (Israel Broussard), with whom she has presumably had a one-night stand. Tree comes off as the typical sorority sister–she believes that the world revolves around her, and that she’s better than everyone else. She also chooses to have an affair with her married professor.
While getting ready to celebrate her birthday that evening, she’s suddenly killed by someone wearing a university mascot mask. Lo and behold, she ends up waking up and repeating the same day over and over again. She realizes that she can’t move on until she figures out who is trying to kill her. As she changes the events of the day, her cause of death changes, depending on the circumstances.
The list of suspects includes all the people she’s been mistreating, ignoring, and using for personal gain. Ultimately, the killer is revealed to be an unexpected but interesting character. Without spoilers, things are not what they seem.
Happy Death Day is a movie that some may dismiss, while others may find the concept and humor quite entertaining. I would say it leans more towards comedy than horror. If you’re looking for a Halloween comedy, Happy Death Day will definitely give you a decent hour and a half of laughter.
